Rosie grew up on Noonkanbah Station, her father’s country in the central Kimberley. As the oldest child in her family, she would care for her younger siblings while her parents worked. In her early teens she started work in the station homestead, where the older Aboriginal women taught her housekeeping skills. In the rainy season she and her extended family would go bush for hunting and other traditional cultural practices. Rosie likes to paint the bush foods and medicinal plants, as well as the river story of her father’s country. This painting shows the Ngurgorogoro plant, which grows in the artist’s grandmother’s country. It has edible tubers, a little like the bush yam. They are harvested in the rainy season and roasted in coals.
