This painting puts together the symbols and designs from the possum skin cloaks from Ros’s grandmother’s country together with major totemic symbols. The centre depicts the 3 rivers with her grandmother’s totem – the long necked turtle – which joins all the symbols together. The leaves are representative of the mighty gum trees that are indicative of country – mainly the red gums and the blue gums. The eucalyptus was used as a medicine. The cross hatching designs are traditional to Yorta Yorta country. “This is the essence of my Grandmother – a strong Yorta Yorta woman – a strong influence in my life” Ros explains.
