Bill Harney painted this work in the IXL Atrium next to Art Mob on October 1 & 2. His totem is the grasshopper. The painting shows a male and a female grasshopper – head to head. The surrounding wavy lines are the tracks of the Grasshopper – an ancestral being from the Creation Time. Netbun is a little green grasshopper – make a noise like NEEETT. He’s the one made the song, picked up the earth, sang it, and he put it in the water. Then all the little straw grow from the little bowl he made. And all the straw grew up around him. The straw from the song grew up. The soil itself changed to woolly Margulu. Then he fed (during the Creation Time) many people and that was their food. Today we still eat it when we go out bush – collect Margulu – we don’t boil them – we just slice them all up, put in the still water or running water or bucket. The water cook it. It’s the dreaming where he was made from.
