The painting is the artist’s interpretation of when her father and brother would collect swan eggs during early misty mornings in Gemmell’s swamp. Gemmell’s swamp was abundant in Swan Eggs however the artist was always afraid to venture too far in the swamp because of the fear of the many spirits that lived there. The artist’s father would tell her that many spirits lived in the swamp – some good, some bad. Many times whilst collecting the swan eggs the artist felt the spirits drawing near. The centre figure in the painting is the artists interpretation of her father coming through the mist with swan eggs many times seeing him at a distance through the mist she was not sure if it was a spirit come to claim her or if it was her father. The artist said the relief was overpowering once she was sure it was her father. She couldn’t get back home quick enough.
