This is the whales beached on Ocean Beach in Strahan. The Tasmanian tradition was to light small fires right along the beach when whales beached themselves. This was to alert other people in the area that the whales are beached and it was a time to harvest. They could see the smoke screen and the people would then gather to get the meat and the blubber.
