Wattle Grub Journey:
Aboriginal people survived off the land, to do this they had to know how, when and where food could be found.
My painting represents the life cycle of the Tasmanian Wattle Grub and their journey from when the egg is first laid, represented by the white dots in the lower left hand corner.
Once the egg hatches the small grub starts to eat its way through the tree growing and adding fat content until its time to pupate and re-enter the outside world as a fully grown moth (living for approximately 1 week) starting the process over again.
Wattle grubs live for approximately three years and during this time they are harvested by Aboriginal people as food with a very high fat content.
My painting shows the branch where the grub enters the tree and its journey is represented by the the round wooden discs showing the hole/tunnel where the grub travelled until it re-entered the outside world.
