When the first men and women moved about this great land they were guided by only the moon’s light. The land was cold and dark because the sun had not been created by the Great Spirit. The men hunters caught small animals that they could catch by hand. In those early days the biggest creature was the large Emu. The hunters knew that if they could capture one the flesh from the Emu would provide plenty of food for the whole tribe. But because the Emu was so fast and the land so dark and cold the Emu always vanished into the darkness. The tribe held a special ceremony and pleaded with the Great Spirit to make the land warmer and lighter so they would be able to capture the Emu’s. The Great Spirit listened to the tribe’s pleas and made the Sun creating the first night and day.
