There is a story that in the beginning the red waratahs were white. In the blue mountains area the wongha pidgeons camped in the undergrowth where the waratahs grew. They never flew above the tree tops, because of the hawks. One day a male wongha flew off looking for food. A long time later its mate became worried and went looking for her mate, she flew up high above the tree tops. A hawk swooped down and slashed out with it sharp claws ripping open her chest. As she struggled down to her nest, stopping to rest on the white waratahs, her blood dripped and soaked the white petals of the waratah. Since that day waratahs are red, a symbol of the little wongha’s blood.
