Harry Tjutjuna Wanka: Spider 2008
Acrylic on linen
1140 x 620mm

In speaking of his work Harry initially talked about spiderwebs, as a direct visual reference to the web-like forms. He then went on to describe himself as spider man, spiders being involved with the Tjukurpa, or creation stories of his birthplace. People often associate themselves with one or more of the creatures of their 'ngura' (homeplace) in this way. He also spoke about himself and his role as a 'ngangkari' (traditional healer) and I wonder if this relates to the ngangkaris use of spiderwebs in treatment of cuts and skin injuries.
