This image depicts our Badu island ancient religious beliefs of when a person dies. The spirit of the dead departs to the breaker front of the reef to join the other dead spirits. The island spirits of the dead dances day and night until when a tombstone of the dead person is unveiled. This is followed by a feasting ceremony held on the same day. This involves traditional dancing.
The dancing and singing during the feasting we call Kula Piddan which means the unveiling of the dead person.
The songs, dance and the beating of traditional Warup drum leads to the dead spirit being summoned by its Totem – whichever totem it belongs to.
It then travels to a sacred place called “Kibu” where the dead person is still believed to be alive and rests with its Totem – also known as Augaad (God).
This print is also the artist’s tribute to Billy Missi.
