Jimmy McKenzie was born on Texas Downs Station near Purnululu (Bungle Bungles) in the East Kimberley. He grew up in this country, his early adult years were spent working the stock camps with his mother Queenie McKenzie. This painting is of hill country on Mable Down Station in the East Kimberley. It depicts a place called Baloowa (Violet Valley), a large hill with a distinctive notch at the top made by the Nyagoomany (Rock Cod) in the dreamtime.
