Joseph is a fine carver – predominantly in lino and has recently won an award for his print “Badu Harbour”, however his work in wood is exceptional and it was from a wooden carving that the silicone mould was produced. Badu has the only indigenous Bronze/Aluminium foundry in Australia, and it’s only recently been commissioned. The Dugong tells two stories – as a Totem it belongs to Joseph’s mother. The other is a comment on the sadness of the Ghost Nets – floating for years in the water in great curtains and netting all – and frequently either causing the drowning death or the shark attack of Dhangal (dugong) of all sizes. This one watches her calves.
