This painting depicts a Jukurrpa (dreamtime story). In the Jukurrpa there were two wati (men) who were travelling around creating hills and soaks. They saw two big goannas, one was a brown one called a Tilti and the other one was a Parnajarrpa or Yalipara a larger black one. The men were painting on themselves, one with black and the other one had brown. They painted themselves and the goannas and then went away. Both of the Goannas are represented in the painting. The blue one on the outside is Tilti and the brown colour with the spots is Parnajarrpa. In this story both the men and Goanna’s have a skin group which part of the kinship system integral to Martu culture. Tilti the smaller of the two is Purungu and the parnajarrpa who is longer is Milanka.
