makatingari jilamara-like running water: The cross lines and dots represent male and female body painting designs during ceremony. The small dots of ochre made individually with the end of a stick or brush are called ‘pwanga’ or “yirrinkiripwanga” which is a masculine noun and means dots painted on the face. The female body painting design is the crossed lines or “malapurrini” heavy rain. This work is part of a series called “Makatinga” or running water. It represents the ritual washing at the end of funeral ceremonies. When she had completed her ritual washing after her husbands death ceremonies, she went to her boyfriend because he looked after her, and fed her. He bacame her new husband.
