William painted this piece in Melbourne in January 2008. He was staying with his friend Margo Birnberg who had met him in the bush about 1960. Margo was the first white kunga “woman” that William had ever seen. She now regularly has William to visit to restore his health. She is writing a book about William that will be published late in 2008. The Bush Tucker Dreaming relates to country that William travelled across from Pitjantjatjara country to Ngaanatjatjara country in the west and up through Pintupi country back to the Pit lands on an annual cyclical path following the availability of different bush foods. The neatness of this work reflects his comfort zone and his state of health and compares with quite a difference to the harsher colours and looseness of some of his works painted at Papunya where he usually resides.
