Cassandra’s family come from the Western Kimberley in the Derby region. This is the home of the Wandjina – the spirits that come in the onset of the wet season in the clouds and that are depicted widely on the rock walls of the Kimberley. The style of Wandjina shown is very typical of that region – made famous by Donny Woolagoodja with his Wandjina imagery that rose into the sky above the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The hand prints are also frequently found in that region – along with many other indigenous rock art areas. The smaller figures are probably the children of the Wandjina. More information about this culture can be found in the books Yorro Yorro & Keeping the Wandjinas Fresh.
