Image description: The design for this rug is from an original painting. Kathy paints many ‘topographical’ images, her work is very influenced by her country and the landforms of the remote Anagu Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjarjara Lands, in remote north-west South Australia. The different forms of the desert landscape have a great impact on the artists’ use of colour and image construction. The imagery is also influenced by the ancient Aboriginal culture and the land from which it draws its origins. Specific titles, however, are seldom given to contemporary artwork. This piece is a good example of very recent, more simplified images now being produced at Kaltjiti Arts. Artist: Kathy Maringka is from Fregon on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara Lands, 350km south east of Uluru. Her painting medium is acrylic on canvas with subjects relating to traditional foods and the abstract ‘walka’ – abstract images – a style unique to the region. Fabric is her primary medium, working with the technique of batik. Kathy has been exhibiting her work throughout Australia since 1994.
