The design for this rug is from an original painting by Alfred George, a new artist to the centre, and a young man which is unusual as most of the members are women. Alfred has painted the country around Fregon showing the rocky ranges that are part of the Musgrave ranges, the sparse vegetation and a water hole. Ngura- Country and it’s features are common themes amongst the Anangu as this is what has provided their livelihood for centuries. Project: These beautiful, unique rugs are a cross-cultural collaboration combining Aboriginal designs and traditional Kashmiri rug-making techniques. Chain stitched, using hand dyed wool and finished with a heavy cotton backing, each rug is a completely handmade piece. This project, although in its early stages, is already bringing noticeable benefit to the artists and the community. Purchase of these rugs guarantees a direct return to the Aboriginal artists, as the project is an initiative of Kaltjiti, their own art organisation. Artist: Alfred was born in Alice Springs. He lives at the Mulga Bore Homelands on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. Fregon is the nearest Community, ten kilometres away. His grandmother on his mother’s side is Pitjantjatjara and grandfather is Yankuntjatjara. His father’s family is Pitjantjatjara. He is married with two sons. Alfred is a keen motor bike rider having participated in two Finke motorcycle races. He achieve fifth place in 2004.
