Image description: The design for this rug is from an original painting. Andy has recently begun painting, working on a series that describes his country Nyultu. Project: These beautiful, unique rugs are a cross-cultural collaboration combining Aboriginal designs and traditional Kashmiri rug-making techniques. Chain stitched, using hand dyed wool and finished with a heavy cotton backing, each rug is a completely handmade piece. This project, although in its early stages, is already bringing noticeable benefit to the artists and the community. Purchase of these rugs guarantees a direct return to the Aboriginal artists, as the project is an initiative of Kaltjiti, their own art organisation. Artist: Andy Tjilari was born at Nyultu near Kalka in the west of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands and lived a traditional life with his family travelling around their country until they moved east to Ernabella, when he was a young teenager. Andy attended school at Ernabella. He was already married when he and his family, consisting of his wife and the first of his two children, moved to Fregon in the early 1960’s. An active, important elder in the community, he was a key figure in the establishment of the new community at Fregon as well as assisting in the clinic and also works with the NPY Women’s Council. Painting is a very new art form for Andy who also carves traditional implements such as boomerangs and spears.
