Fairy Wrens – Three Little Birds (Kadatja Man)
It’s 1983 “2nd day of Jan” very hot day. My parents are dropping me at Wallace Rockhole, west of Alice Springs towards Hermannsburg (Ntaru). A place for troublesome kids. I was a bit naughty at the age of 16 that year. So they talk to the Boss Man about me. All’s well, then they leave. The Boss Man then tells me do what you like for now, for tomorrow you will be working hard every day, you’ll do what I say okay. I say yes sir. Then before he goes to lay down, because of the heat, he tells me, don’t go over there towards the old yards near some scrub, mulga three scrub. As soon as he goes and lays down, I naturally go over to the yards. Walking around the yards for a little while, I decide to go to the mulga scrub. Absolutely nothing there, nothing just scrub, and it was very hot, nothing to do. I was very active, lots of energy, and I was hopeful something might happen. Suddenly a movement in the tree, I saw a little red robin that’s what I thought at the time. Turns out it was a fairy wren. Anyway I’m really into nature so I wanted to look at the little red bird. Next minute, a little blue robin, wow, I said, a red and a blue together and in no time at all, another little bird, this time yellow. I went crazy with excitement. This is really happening. 3 little robins in the same tree, they just appeared one after the other, and they were all different colours. This was a really big deal, I knew. This just doesn’t happen in reality. Mind-blowing. I just arrived, first couple of hours I see these 3 little birds together. Well the red one kept flying away from tree to tree, ‘cos I just wanted to get a good look at all 3 together and honestly they led me, or should I say, lured me along way from the yards way into the bush, finally stopping, the 3 little birds perched themselves in a small tree, for 2 to 3 minutes. I got a really good look, to this day 100 out of 100 for what I saw. Then ‘Ring’, something or someone told me Cameron run now. In my mind it just kept saying run back, quickly run. This was not good. There is a man (Kadatja Man) standing very close to you, danger. In our culture he’s invisible to my eyes, showing the 3 Little Birds made me follow him. This is why the Boss Man told me not to go near the yards. I ran all the way back to the yards. I’ve never told anyone the story from Wallace Rockhole ever yet. The (Kadatja) Man followed me for years after, all over Australia, even the Tiwi Islands. So it’s all real, all of it, I’ve seen much, even we can do these kinds things, but only for good, for Ngarte, who is creator of all. He created the Kadatja Man to be the sheriff of the law, if you wrong seriously then he will come for you for sure. This one was a bit of a bad sort of one. I often wonder what happened to him. It’s been a long time.
