Her work draws deeply on her Aboriginal heritage and refers to the Symbolism, Spiritualism and Mythology within the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture, showing a relationship between the landscape and the Tasmanian Aboriginal people. A descendant of the Chief of the Cape Portland-Ben Lomond tribe, Manarlargenna, Judith’s work consists of the Tasmanian Aboriginal petroglyphs, carved by her Aboriginal Ancestors into rocks in specific areas around Tasmania. The St. Andrews cross within the work depicts religious and spiritual connotations. The hand print in the centre is the hand of friendship, and seen as a signature of the Aboriginal people. Judith-Rose Thomas was the first Tasmanian Aboriginal Artist whose work was purchased under the State Government’s Art for Public Buildings Scheme in 2002. Ms Thomas holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, a Bachelor of Contemporary Art with Honours, and a Masters of Fine Art and Design from the University of Tasmania
