Kek Uuyang is a major totem for Roderick and his family.
“Kek Uuyang is a story about the echidna. At the beginning of time, he didn’t have any spikes. He didn’t even have a language so he went around to different campsites looking for a good language he could speak. Some of the people saw him wandering around and didn’t know what he was. They threw spears at him and covered him with “kek” (spears). After this, the people looked and saw that he was covered in spears and they called him “kek Uuyang” which means “many spears”.
This is a creation story that my old people taught. It’s a big story for the Wik-Mungkan people. I’m part of the Wik- Mungkan people from my mother’s side.” – Roderick Yunkaporta
