Wild Sweeting Potatoes, Fruit, Wild Bush Coconut, West North of Yuendumu, 170km from Tanami Highway. Audrey has painted a depiction of her country way out in the Warlpiri desert country about 170km west of Yuendumu. Yuendumu is about 350km north west of Alice Springs. Her theme is bush tucker and she shows in the centre the wild bush sweet potato as tubers in their maturity on one axis and as a flowering vine on the other axis. At each end of the painting she shows bush coconut and bush raisins. Around the edge of the painting is the bush banana vine. She shows the various types of country in differing colours, reflecting the diversity of the desert. Women’s ceremony is conducted as the women move through the country collecting food. They paint their upper bodies and faces and sing and dance to honour the Ancestral beings who created this country in the Dreamtime and also to promote the growth of the various foods in the forthcoming season. The painting is viewed as a map of the land – a bird’s eye view. Audrey’s unique style of multicoloured dotting gives a wonderful 3-dimensionality to her work. Her use of colour is exuberant and reflective of the beauty of her Warlpiri country.
