This painting is in reference to the Dhuwa and Yirritja Moieties. Moiety is a form of social organisation in which most people and most natural phenomena are divided into two classes or categories. A person usually marries someone of the opposite moiety and is forbidden to marry into his or her own moiety. Yolngu clans are divided into moieties called Yirritja and Dhuwa. This painting is about Mother (Yirritja) and Son (Dhuwa), represented by the Barramundi and the Long-Neck Turtle, each with their own small offspring. The subject of this painting is about kin relationships, in particular about patrilineal moiety, where children at birth belong to the moiety of their father.
