Religious paintings by Queenie McKenzie.
“There were no apparent conflicts in Queenie’s mind between her traditional and her Christian beliefs”. A devout Catholic, Queenie McKenzie got to know Bishop Jobst, the Bishop of Broome and his successor Christopher Saunders – the current Bishop of Broome. Bishop Jobst features in many of Queenie’s paintings that interlink her Christian beliefs with her country of Texas Downs.
Her quirky paintings of God and Jesus superimposed on well recognisable East Kimberley country add to the richness of culture. This series of eight paintings form a virtual exhibition at Art Mob over the 2017 Easter week. “Poor Bugger” is hung proudly as #1 on the wall in the gallery’s Easter exhibition.
