Many Rivers to Cross comes from the far north Queensland Cape York small community of Lockhart River.
The paintings for this exhibition were selected by Euan in April. Two of them were too long to fit into the small planes that service the community so art centre manager Enoch Perazim and his assistant Terry Platt loaded them into the car and drove the 1200km to Cairns with some 30 paintings destined for Art Mob in Hobart.
They crossed many rivers along the way and photos of some of these river crossings can be seen below.
Many Rivers to Cross also talks about the importance of river systems to the ecology and communities of that region. It also talks about the hardships and challenges faced by remote Aboriginal communities. For example, the Lockhart River community was almost isolated with lack of telecommunications for nearly 3 months recently with businesses and the community suffering. As a result of this, the art centre put out a call to all galleries who are their agents asking for support with significant art purchases. Art Mob came to the rescue buying a full exhibition that will officially launch on May 25th.
