Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra Possum Dreaming 2002

Acrylic on linen 914 x 1219mm SOLD The concentric circles represent the important sites where the possum men ancestors stop during their travels through this country in the world creation 'Dreamtime' period. These ancestors performed ceremonies and various other secret sacred rituals in which many aspects of the land were created and modified to become what it is today. The deeds of the possum ancestors are honoured by present day aboriginal people in corroborees performed at these sites. The curving lines depict the travels of the possum ancestors. The E shapes indicate possum prints. The background dotting is indicative of body paint designs used during ceremonies.
