The work relates to markings seen on the body of mature dugongs. These are scratches caused by the mammals rubbing up against stones and corals on the reefs in an endeavour to remove barnacles, id, and other marine parasites from their bodies.
If left unattended the parasites would endanger the health of the dugongs.
