Viviana Petyarre is from Utopia, Northern Territory. She comes from a family of painters, her grandmothers are Nancy, Kathleen, Gloria, Violet, Myrtle and Ada Bird Petyarre and her father is Christopher Kngwarraye Kunoth (custodian for Emily Kame Kngwarraye’s Country of Alhalkere). Viviana is also a filmmaker and has made documentaries with her grandmothers and father.
It is through Vivianas family members that she has learnt to paint and been given permission to paint stories and Dreamings from her Country, Atneltye, Alhalkere and Atnangkere. As a Utopian artist she feels driven to maintain and uphold the traditional paintings that first emerged in the modern Utopia Art Movement and explores her own perspectives of home using traditional styles. Viviana predominately paints “Arnkerrthe” (Mountain Devil Lizard) Dreaming, passed down from her grandmother Nancy who taught her how to paint this Dreaming.
