Born near Lake Mackay in Pintupi country, he is the younger brother of Freddy West. The family came in to Balgo in WA and Tony grew up at Balgo, moving to Kiwikurra in the mid ’80s when the settlement was established there in 1984. It was here that he began painting, in the late ’80s, his work depicting Tingari stories from around the area of Lake Mackay in a manner influenced by the ‘linked dotting’ style of many Balgo artists. His painting of Nyuntjuri, a Storm Dreaming site associated with storms and lightning, was featured on the catalogue of “Friendly Country, Friendly People” (Araluen Arts Centre, Alice Springs, 1990).
