Sarrita King was born on March 5th 1988. Her father William Jungala King was from the tribe Gurindji. Sarrita grew up in Darwin in the Northern Territory.
During 2005 Sarrita visited her father several times and became interested in his art. After completing high school in Darwin and being accepted by the South Australian Institute of Sport for netball Sarrita decided to move to Adelaide permanently.
Sarrita now spends most of her time in her fathers studio working on her art. Sarrita’s inspiration for her art is the amazing environment she grew up with in the Northern Territory. Sarrita reflects on much of her experiences with family members, especially her father who taught her about her Aboriginal heritage and the connection to our world in general.
“Rain Dreaming” is inspired by the torrential downpours that occur in the Northern Territory. From a young age these big rains have always fascinated Sarrita. She remembers seeing the storms in the distance and being amazed by the patterns formed by the raindrops, lightning and the clouds and these elements are represented in her paintings.
Her unique style of painting plays on her father’s very fine dot painting but flicks the painting stick to “tail” each dot giving a fascinating visual effect of movement. This effect, coupled with her contemporary use of metallised acrylic paint, makes her painting shimmer.
