Reece George

Reece George (b. 1967, Perth, Western Australia) is a Martu painter based in Woodstock, New South Wales. Working in acrylic on canvas, he is best known for compositions that combine Martu storytelling with a contemporary visual language of dot work, line, broad fields of colour, and character-driven imagery. His paintings draw on memory, Country, and family history, moving between portraits of Martu presence and playful scenes of dingoes, rabbits, and emus. Raised on Beyondie Station in the Western Desert, George brings the colours, textures, and stories of that landscape into a practice that is both culturally grounded and immediately recognisable.
George’s work centres on connection to land, kinship, resilience, and joy. In the Martu Faces series, he uses dense, carefully layered mark-making to build portraits that speak to strength, wisdom, and cultural continuity. Alongside these works, his animal paintings introduce humour as part of the emotional structure of the work rather than decoration alone. Dingoes in sunglasses, fence-line rabbits, and emus with attitude carry memories of station life and oral storytelling, while also opening the work to broad contemporary audiences. Across both bodies of work, George maintains a balance between cultural depth and warmth, allowing seriousness and playfulness to sit together.
George began painting professionally in 2024 and quickly gained national attention. In 2025 he presented Martu Faces: Stories in Shadow & Light at Wentworth Gallery, Brisbane, and Mardu (One of Us) at Rosnay Organic Wines, Canowindra. He has also been represented at the Affordable Art Fair in Brisbane and was a finalist in the 2025 Central Belonging Art Award. His work is held in private and institutional collections across Australia and internationally, including Comunify, the Translational Research Institute at Princess Alexandra Hospital, and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. George is represented by Wentworth Galleries in Brisbane and Sydney, Manyung Gallery Group in Victoria and more recently Art Mob in Tasmania..
