Katie was born on Texas Downs Station, near Warmun Community. She was sent to school at Beagle Bay at a young age, and only came back to her family once a year for Christmas. When she finished school she returned to Texas where she worked in the garden for a while and went to Alice Downs Station to work in the stock camp as a cook.
In her 20s Katie moved to Warmun where she worked at the school, teaching the children reading and writing. When she first started work there the current school building had not been built, and school was conducted beneath the trees. For a while Katie moved with her husband to Doon Doon, an outstation 100km north of Warmun. She returned from there in 1993 and started work as an aged care worker at Warmun Community’s Walumba Hostel, and is still working there today. Katie is also a long-standing member of Warmun Council.
Katie started painting in early 1999 with the encouragement of her aunt and fellow artist Lena Nyadbi. Katie’s brother Churchill Cann and her sister Nancy Nodea are also artists.
