June Brown is a Tasmanian Aboriginal artist from Cape Barren Island of the North East coast of Tasmania. The tradition of shell stringing has been passed down to June from her mother Joan Brown. Joan was recognised as one of the leading traditional necklace stringers in Tasmania. Her necklaces are highly sought after by collectors around the world. June’s mother spent many hours teaching June the skill of knowing where to look and how to find these unique shells. The knowledge of how to collect, clean and string the shells is handed down from generation to generation. Presently in Tasmania, June is one of the few Tasmanian Aboriginal women who continue to carry out this important cultural practice. The tradition of shell necklaces is many thousands of years old. These necklaces were made as adornment for ceremonies and also traded between Tasmanian tribes and bands for such things as ochre and stone tools. The maireener and other shells used to make the necklaces are mainly found on the beaches at Cape Barren and Flinders Islands.
