Freda Price Petyarre is a young Utopian woman who is daughter to well-known artist, Anna Price Petyarre. Utopia is located approximately 260km north east of Alice Springs and is an area that is abundant with the Bush Yam. Freda represents the Yam Seed as a delicate white dot work, while the coloured loop-like lines represent the flowers of the Yam plant. The Bush Yam plant is one of the most reliable sources of food found in Freda’s country. The yam is most abundant after the rain when the root system is at its most prolific stage of regeneration. The Bush yam grows underground with a viney shrub that grows above ground up to 1 metre high. Yam seed is collected and ground to form a flour that can be used for making bush damper (bread).
