Tasmanian Aboriginal Lineage:
Caroline Chisholm
Dolly Dalrymple
Chief Mannalargenna (ca. 1770-1835) who was a powerful supreme head warrior and the chief of the Ben Lomond tribe (Plangermaireener).
Dane’s work explores place, a connection to Tasmania, through experience and ancestry. Imagery is inspired by the macro and the micro, science, patterns in nature, country, presence of the land and being immersed in the land. Constructing abstracted landscape, through a primary discipline of drawing, shapes merge with shape, line with line to create new and exciting vistas. Hybrid plants and animals join horizons to create fictional narratives and observations. Continually experimenting with technologies Dane’s practice also involves printmaking of a contemporary nature with photo based printmaking. All works reflect this remarkable place we are lucky enough to live in, Tasmania.
Commenting on future possibilities of the environment, as well as past history Dane’s work is contemporary and reflects his cross cultural identity. From Dane’s father’s side he has a line from Dolly Dalrymple, her mother being Woretemoeteyenner a daughter of the chief Mannarlargenna. Not forgetting the importance of a mixture of family ancestry coming from Scotland too.
Born 1982 and resided Ulverstone till 2000 before moving to Hobart to study at UTAS completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in printmaking. Dane’s practice fluctuates between drawing, photography, painting and printmaking from his now residence at Beaumaris on the East Coast of Tasmania.
