Jinani was the son of Purukaparli and Bima, important ancestoral figures in the Tiwi parlinari (dreamtime/creation time). As Bima is tempted into the bush to make love with her brother-in-law Taparra, the baby boy dies of heatstroke. Although he was in a shady spot, his mother’s long absence meant the sun moved over and he was burned and killed. Following Jinani’s tragic death all Tiwi would die too, and in grief his father Purukaparli performed the first Pukumani ceremony.
