This shield was carved and painted by the artist at Papunya in 1975/75. Such shields were used for ceremony and also as a basic shield for someone who had broken the law. The elders would mete out judgement on offenders and a harsh penalty was to have a number of spears thrown at the offender who could either try to dodge them or deflect them with a narrow shield such as this piece.
