Kanta are soft fleshy white fruit similar to coconuts that grow encased in the hard shells of wasp galls which grow on ‘wurrkali’ (bloodwood [Eucalyptus terminalis]) trees. Inside the fruit live small grubs which are delicious and sweet to eat. Later turn into wasps (‘wangarla’ [Cysticoccus pommiformus]) and fly away. Napangardi and Napanangka women would go out collecting ‘kanta’ at Puturlu, west of Yuendumu.
