Emily describes her painting as ‘walka’ which means design. Walka can be any meaningful mark, whether on the body for ceremonial occasions, on rocks or cave walls, on wood or on the ground. The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara walka draws on the whole of the physical, cultural and celestial landscape. This abstract image is typical of Walka work, which is unique to the Aboriginal women artists of the Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara Lands, in remote north-west South Australia. The different forms of the desert landscape have a great impact on the artists use of colour and image construction. The imagery is also influenced by the ancient Aboriginal culture and the land from which it draws its origins.
